Limb Salvage Surgery in Ahmedabad
Limb salvage is an advanced superspecialty that reclaims severely crushed, diabetic, or gangrenous limbs to prevent amputation. We combine bone debridement, vascular re-routing, and microvascular free tissue transfer flaps to reconstruct functional weightbearing arches.
Indications for Limb Salvage
- Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI): Severe artery blockage causing resting pain and non-healing wounds.
- Wagner Grade 3 & 4 Ulcers: Deep abscesses, bone infection (osteomyelitis), or localized gangrene.
- Crush Trauma: Exposed bones, joints, and torn blood vessels.
Microvascular Reconstruction (Free Flaps)
When standard dressing fail because bones or tendons are exposed, primary skin grafts cannot take. Dr. Apurva Agarwal performs Microvascular Free Flap Transfer. This involves moving healthy muscle or skin with its blood supply (usually from the thigh) and re-connecting the microscopic blood vessels under a surgical microscope to the blood vessels in the leg, guaranteeing the tissue survives and covers the wound.
Additionally, structural reconstruction is done to realign bones and balance tendons so that patients do not experience joint collapse (Charcot foot deformity) and can walk independently.
